Gary began guiding in 1981. He ran rivers in California, oregon and Idaho before coming to Arizona in 1991. Since then he's been a Grand Canyon guide, and came to work at CanX in 1994. Gary holds two degrees in geology from Northern Arizona University, and has been involved in geological and environmental studies of Grand Canyon resources sponsored by the Grand Canyon River Guides, Inc., the National Park Service and United States Geological Survey. Thoroughly enamored by the desert southwest, he loves to explore the back country, and relaxes with really bad guitar-playing, and equally lame pencil drawings. His artwork has appeared in three publications, including Our National Parks and the Search for Sustainability, O'Brien 1999, University of Austin press, Austin Texas; and Up Shits Creek: Tales of the Groover, Lindsey, 1997, University of California Berkely press, Berkely, California.
